| The Vittoriano or Altare della Patria, is a national monument situated in Rome, on Campidoglio Hill, designed by architect Giuseppe Sacconi, inaugurated on 4th June 1911 on the occasion of the fifty years of the Unification of Italy. The name “Vittoriano” comes from Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy, first king of Italy. Since when, in 1921, it held the remains of Milite Ignoto (a military died in war), the monument took a new symbolic value, and what was initially thought of a dynastic monument, finally it became a celebration of united Italy and his freedom. The monument is situated in Piazza Venezia, one of the most important squares of Rome where meet five of the most important streets of the capital among which Via del Corso. Since the huge monument had to dominate the square, to take space some buildings situated on Campidoglio Hill were torn down. I really like this monument because I think it’s one of the most beautiful in Rome and Italy and every time I go there I’m amazed by his size and prominence. |
