The Newsam Library at the UCL Institute of Education holds 27 Special Collections of books and pamphlets relating to education. These are discrete, mainly historical collections of published books and documents reflecting the history of education. The collections vary in size and coverage. Some have been built up from a variety of sources such as the History of Education Collection and contain teachers handbooks, manuals and early textbooks. Others are the personal libraries of individual educationists such the collections belonging to the school inspectors, Captain Francis H. Grenfell (Physical Education) and F. H. Hayward (Moral Education). Although there are many 18th and 19th century books, the majority of the collection dates from the 1920s onwards.
